Thanks Brooke, I have all your books and pick them up regularly and re-read sections. Your books are what lead me here, as Slow was a game changer for me. It was nice to hear your Eulogy read aloud with your voice. I'll be working on these exercises during the week, still sitting with my values. Have a great day everyone. PS there is a lovely community of people here xx

Hi Brooke.

Some questions for the Q&A:

1) Is it okay to have more than say 5 values - I'm stuck on 7?

2) Would Self-Care be considered a value as opposed to "Health", incorporating such things as say yoga/meditation/work-life balance. Or is this more a tool?

3) How often do you recommend revisiting your values?

Thanks again xxx

Hi Brooke. Thank you for all of this. I have been sitting with my values and recording something each day in my life that shows I am living in them. This has also helped me define them more fully. (Growth can be knowledge, reacting differently in a stressful situation, saving $, watering my plants . . . . )

Questions:

Hint for what to do when life forces you to focus more on one value, perhaps at the expense of another. I am thinking of when my value of relationships and self-care many not align - I may need to forgo self-care to help a grieving friend for example.

Also - how do you know if your values have changed?

Thanks again

Brooke thank you SO much for this workshop. I just completed last week’s values work and I am mulling it over. It feels transformative, certainly exciting to have this fresh outlook on my core values. I am halfway through this week’s recording, I have my newborn asleep close to my chest in the baby wrap and I feel a world of feelings listening to the video. I will do the work slowly during this week, I can already see how powerful it might be. Thank you 🤍

Brooke,

The exercise in this weeks post was the most difficult and the most healing when I did it in one of your previous workshops. It helped me work through so much shame, guilt and pain. It was so powerful and I’m curious and excited to see what comes from the exercise this time!

Brooke,

I’ve been following your work for awhile. You first helped me clarify my values through the exercise of writing out “My Why.” I’ve kept the list in the notes app on my phone and have reread it often over the years. Defining my core values felt like an extension of that exercise.

In doing this work, I’ve realized that my values have shifted as my kids have gotten older and as I’ve aged myself. The conversation around tool versus value was also helpful for me. At first I listed solitude as a value, but then I realized that it’s not actually one of my values, but a tool instead. Because when I have time alone to think and reflect it recharges me to live out my values. Does that make sense?

I thought I’d share my core values and how I defined them for myself. The list feels true to who I am and who I want to be in world.

Acceptance- of myself and others

Connection- to humanity and nature

Contribution- to the world through small acts of love

Family- if you want to change the world, go home and love your family

Simplicity- live life simply to attune to what matters most

I hope everyone is getting as much as I am out of this work. It’s nice to be a part of an online community that’s above the noise ❤️

Katie
