My goal is to continue the few small habits I have started this year to help them stick.

1. Each night once I have bathed my 8month old, I give him to my husband for 10-15 min so I can do a quick reset, toys away, dishwasher on, etc. this means once I put my son to bed, the rest of the night is for me and not housework, and the house feels calmer in the morning

2. I am reviewing each email subscription as it comes into my inbox and unsubscribing from most of them

3. I have started a logbook journal like you have discussed previously. I also add all my appts for the week, and then 1-3 things I’d like to achieve (one of yesterday’s goals was have a nap, which I achieved!)

So far these things have given my mind a lot of space, and I actually feel up to tackling some of the bigger jobs around the house, or enjoying just having time for me (this week I crocheted and watched a movie for the first time since my son was born!)

My goal is about general organisational skills & routine, to make life run a little smoother. Our family will have some significant changes this year with our youngest starting school and me returning to FT work with a significant commute.

1. Batching meals on weekends so those days when I'm in the office and have the long commute, I don't have to stress about late dinner, homework etc all at once.

2. Empowering the rest of my family to take on more of the thinking. Everyone is tasked with picking at least one dinner for the following week (and has to help cook it).

3. Meal planning and shopping in advance.

4. Using the commute for practical tasks instead of mindless scrolling.

5. Using WFH days to stay on top of washing

6. Get a cleaner?

You get the idea...

Brooke, this excites me so much, I had no idea you were doing this last year and I wrote a book about it - The 1% Wellness Experiment - published in December! I make it 10mins for waking hours by taking off the recommended eight hours sleep. Let me know if you want to chat about it! x

Yippee can't wait!! Looking forward to doing this with you Brooke!

I have been looking forward to this so much.

I am making some big moves to improve my health and wellness this year and I will be using the 1% for that, but also for getting on top of organisation.

We have a change with a very large commute being done by my husband- from next week. He’s a teacher, so our life is already very term based.

I did the values workshop last year and have my word - but it’s not resonating with me like I thought so I might go back to drawing board with that.

Your letters are my highlight on this app - hope you’re having an amazing summer break 😀

Hi Brooke, I'm really looking forward to this experiment and reading everyone's updates. My area of focus this year and my word for the year is "positivity". This is hard to admit but I've been told by friends and family that I tend to focus on the negative too much. This year I want to focus on the positive. I'm still thinking about how this will fit in with my 1%.

The other areas I want to focus on for the 1% are:

-Connection (being more consistent with checking in with friends/family)

-Self-care (trying to do daily yoga, deep breathing)

-Health (drink more water, eat more fruit and veg)

-Nature (get out for more walks)

-Gardening (the tasks are sometimes overwhelming)

My word for the year is progress so this should fit in very nicely.

Some areas I need to see progress will need more than a 1 percent (TAFE diploma) to get back on track but others will fit nicely.

I will get to work on those lists...

Hello Brooke and All-

I’m really excited to be in this experiment with you all! My 1% efforts are in 2 categories:

Daily 1%

Reflection Time (any one of these) to be in better touch with myself and my truth:

-just breathe

-listening to Brooke and The Tortoise! 🐢

-journal

-knitting

-lying/sitting still to just let my mind reset

Grad Bag of incremental changes

Find more kindness towards my husband:

-hugs and good mornings before the day starts

-send a little note for ❤️ during the day

-ask about his day while cooking dinner together

-seek input about projects at work

-hugs and good-nights at the end of the day

-thank you’s when he’s done a task that helps me/the house/chores

Three cheers to you all for striving to be in better alignment with ourselves, our lives and being healthier human beings!

Angie

Can’t wait for this! Thanks Brooke!

My word for the year is Care after a very busy and burnt out 2023- so the 1% really appeals to me, rather than some large ambitious goal.

My “big” goal would be to write the second draft of a novel that’s sat in my drawer since 2021. But I have a full-time job and two young kids (3 & 6) so a strict daily writing goal feels intimidating.

I love your grab and go list- while 30 mins of writing is great on days where it works, the 1% could also be: thinking of 5 mins of brainstorming, write one scene (or plan for scene), journaling on the days that writing my novel seems to ambitious, walking and thinking about my story. More important to build the habit of making my story front of mind and writing generally, than reaching a certain word count goal each day. 🙂

Oh I forgot to include crafting on my list. I want to do some knitting for charity (after several years of not knitting, coming off many more years of intense knitting).

Plus I’m going to knit a “temperature” throw rug (or scarf - not sure how wide it will be yet); where I knit one row per day, and the colour is determined by that day’s maximum temperature. I have allocated a different colour for different temperature ranges (eg 20-24C; 25-29; 30-34; etc etc).

I need to excavate my yarn from storage boxes (from moving house and several boxes still being in storage) but I’ve been keeping a list of the daily temperatures so I can do several in a row, once I have yarn organised.

As last year was drawing to a close, I started liking the idea of having a loose schedule for my evenings - similar to what my niblings have stuck on their fridge door, showing times for lay, homework, fitness, reading etc.

This all ties-in very nicely with the 1% experiment and I’m so excited to have this as the Tortoise group focus!

Some of the things I want to have on my list (across a week) are: practicing songs for my choir; daily log-booking; formal Japanese study; drawing/doodling; movement; meditation; doggie walks.

I will ponder whether there is one specific thing from my list I want to focus on for the term; or whether perhaps the specific thing is the evening schedule itself. 🤔

I’m excited 😊
