I just finished listening to this episode in the car heading to town for errands, and a coffee out. What a treat. Balance is such a tricky topic and one that I am always interested in discussing. The pressure to do everything efficiently and productively is exhausting. For me, as a homemaker, there was no such thing as a work/family separation. Everything blended since my work was at home. Now that I am switching gears into a new phase of "working" for myself. Things are beginning to shift. At first, I felt the pressure to create harsh boundaries between the two. Recently, I have switched my thoughts. Now, I carve out pockets of time for my work, self-care, connection and time outside. It looks different every day, but it releases the pressure from getting it "right" or achieving the "perfect" balance. As the mom of two GenX boys, I completely agree with your sentiment that they are not lazy. They want something different out of life. They don't want to work in an office for 60 hours a week until they retire at 67. They want experiences and a full life. They want to choose what life looks like for them, not dictated by a company. I think that is brave! Wonderful episode Brooke. Thank you.
I think that's a point I wish I had've dug further into Blythe - the blending of work/home/life for many of us. I don't think it's always possible or necessary to hold those different parts of ourselves in totally separate containers (it's all life, isn't it?) and I know I find that my work flows into and around my life and vice versa, making the idea of work/life balance even less applicable.
I also get so much inspiration from our Gen Z-ers. They've seen how we've done things and are pushing back against it. I love it and hope we keep finding ways to support them in exploring it.
So glad you enjoyed this ep - it was a juicy one to dig into 💚💚
I love the Right to Disconnect, but also think that it’s ridiculous that we need a law to enforce it! I work at a hospital, and thankfully am not expected to be ‘on’ when I’m not at work.
I think one thing that helps me ‘balance’ is a weekly to do list and not a daily list. This helps cos I know my son will sleep differently every day, and so I can’t count on a certain amount of time to get things done.
Also do you have the link to the article about the different pillars and how we can only focus on a few of them at a time? I’d love to read it 😊
