Hello mates, hope you’re doing well.
As I mentioned at the end of my last post, I’ll be taking a break from writing here over the next two weeks while the kids are on school holidays. I meant to send this post out on Sunday, but I just couldn’t get my words to work, so I hope you’ll forgive the lateness (and any weirdness you may notice.)
Because I’m gonna level with you. My health has taken a bit of a dip. The past couple of weeks have been a combination of tears, many cancelled plans and an overwhelming level of frustration, all while trying to tilt in and out of “normal life” — work, writing, parenting, home stuff, family stuff, doctors’ appointments and the boring, consistent kind of self-care that doesn’t make for very interesting reading.
Writing is taking me way longer than it normally would, and my head is cloudy to the point of confusion. So much so that I sent the past couple of posts out not really knowing whether they made sense or not. (Relieved to find, when I did come back to them, that they mostly did, so hopefully this one will be the same.)
I know I could have skipped this post, and I know this community is full of the most amazing, compassionate, kind-hearted people who have previously and will in the future understand my need to step back sometimes, but — rightly or wrongly — I felt like I couldn’t tilt into my time off with unfinished business (I don’t know if that’s evidence of my commitment or evidence of the hold hustle culture has over us?)
So here I am, giving you a slightly truncated and very honest look at my 1% this month. And if you have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s a brief recap:
The 1% is my guiding principle of 2023, an effort to make slow and steady change over time rather than taking big, unsustainable leaps occasionally.
Sometimes practising the 1% looks like spending literally 15 minutes of my day on something, other times it’s more about making tiny incremental shifts to what I’m doing, either in the hope of creating significant change over time, or to recognise that a 1% improvement is still an improvement.
