1% in October (and September)
What did the 1% look like last month? And the month before that? And am I even doing this thing anymore?
Mates, hello! Happy weekend to you.
In my quest to take a couple of weeks off over the school holidays, and then trying to recover from my surgery, I completely neglected the 1% recap for September and nearly missed October too. My usual tendency would be to say sorry, but I’m not really.
In fact, skipping that post pretty much epitomises my whole approach to the 1% over the past couple of months. It’s been less about concrete changes and more about letting go by degrees.
I’ve incrementally let go of:
expectations of what my 1% can and must look like — it’s less about being productive now, I think? Or at least, not only about that
how I think it will feel (that’s new)
the idea of ‘succeeding’ with it
When I first started the whole 1% experiment, I thought it would be structured differently. One month I’d spend my 1% efforts on simplifying my life, another month I’d spend them on my health, another would be focused on play or creativity or awe. At the end of the year, I’d be able to look back and see all the concrete ways my life had changed for the better. It would be proof-positive that tiny, consistent efforts over time add up to real change.
Truth be told, I thought it would make a good book, and that a year of experimenting publicly could be a great pitch to a publisher.
